Read More Background: Upper extremity (UE) lymphedema, which negatively affects patients’ personal and social well-being, is the most common complication after breast cancer treatment. Previous studies have demonstrated the adverse effectsof surgical interventions for breast cancer on spinal postures and UE disability;however, no studies have examined the relationships between UE volume and postural changes and between UE volume and UE disability in patients withlymphedema. Furthermore, some spinal postural changes in patients with forward head posture (FHP) remain unassessed in these patients. Therefore, the present study investigated the relationship between the volume of the affected UE with FHP, kyphosis, shoulder protraction, and UE disability in lymphedema patients.Methods: The present cross-sectional study was carried out on 32 women with unilateral UE lymphedema. UE volume and kyphosis were measured by volumetry and a flexible ruler, respectively. Cervical angle was used to assess FHP. To measure shoulder protraction and FHP, data obtained from markers and photography was analyzed in ImageJ software. The disability of the affected UE was assessed by the Persian version of the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using Pearson’s correlation test.Results: Significant positive correlations were observed between UE volume and UE disability as well as kyphosis. Significant negative correlations between UE volume and shoulder as well as cervical angle were also seen. UE disabilityhad a significant negative correlation with shoulder angle but no significant relationship with kyphosis or cervical angle.Conclusion: An increase in the affected UE volume due to lymphedema is related to an increase in UE disability, kyphosis angle, FHP, and shoulder protraction. In addition to treatments for UE volume reduction in lymphedema patients,accurate posture evaluation is also recommended.

Read More Background: Forward head posture (FHP) and kyphosis are the most common postural deviations which various factors are involved in the occurrence of these abnormalities. This study aimed to compare the effect of functional corrective exercises (FCE) and core stability exercises (CSE) on forward head posture and kyphosis in adolescent girls. Methods: The present study is quasi-experiment research and included a pre- and post-test design. 52 students aged 14-16 years old with forward head posture >46 degrees and kyphosis >40 degrees were randomly assigned into four groups, each one consisting of 13 students. Research tools for kyphosis as well as forward head posture assessment included flexible ruler and goniometer, respectively. The experimental groups participated in training programs for 6 weeks, three times per week and for 60-minutes per session, while the control group continued their daily routine activities. The data analysis was carried out using covariance (ANCOVA) analysis via SPSS, version 21. Results: The outcomes showed that there were significant differences among groups, including core stability exercises (CSE) and combined exercises (FCE+CSE) (p= 0.020), core stability exercises (CSE) and Control (p= 0.008), functional corrective exercises (FCE)and Control (p= 0.001), combined exercises (FCE+CSE) and Control (p= 0.001) with respect to kyphosis. For the Forward head posture (FHP) variable, there were significant differences between pre- and post-tests of core stability exercises (CSE) and Control (p= 0.001), functional corrective exercises (FCE)and combined exercises (FCE+CSE) (p= 0.019), functional corrective exercises (FCE)and Control (p= 0.001) as well as combined exercises (FCE+CSE) and Control (p= 0.001) groups. There was no significant difference between pre- and post-test measures of control group. Conclusion: According to this study's results, although all types of training programs had a significant effect on postural correction, but a combined exercises (FCE+CSE) significantly improved forward head posture and kyphosis combined to each training program. Therefore, it is recommended that healthcare professionals and corrective exercise specialists to implement a combined program to have a better result in terms of kyphosis and forward head posture correction

Read More Background: Deafness is the most common sensory-neurological defect in human beings. This study aimed to compare the effect of 8 weeks of Total Body Resistance )TRX( and core stability training on balance and some common abnormalities among deaf adolescents. Methods: This study was conducted with a two-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental study design. The participants included in this study were 20 hearing-impaired students with a degree of deafness between 71-90 dB in Bandar Abbas city who were purposefully selected and then randomly assigned into two groups, as TRX (N=10) and core stability training (N=10). In this study, static balance, dynamic balance, kyphosis and lumbar lordosis, and forward head were measured before and after eight weeks in both groups using one-leg stance test, Y balance test, flexible ruler, and goniometer, respectively. The core stability training consisted of 10 different exercises in the core in terms of the progressing and the TRX protocols. Moreover, these exercises were performed 3 sessions per week for an 8-week period (1 day in between), and each session lasted for 40 minutes. The dependent and independent t-tests were also used to perform the intra-group and inter-group comparisons, respectively. The statistical significance level was set at p ≤ 0.05. Results: The research results show that the abnormalities in the two methods of static balance with open and closed eyes as well as dynamic balance were equally evaluated based on the independent t-test and there was no significant difference between these two methods (p ≥ 0.05). Also, in the forward head, kyphosis, and lordosis variables, the performances of these two methods to reduce the abnormalities were equally evaluated. In this regard, no significant difference was observed between the performances of these two methods (p ≥ 0.05). However, there was a significant difference between the effects of TRX exercises and core stability training on dynamic balance (p ≤ 0.05). Conclusion: Therefore, to reduce abnormalities and improve balance in deaf children, both methods can be considered as effective with no difference.

Read More Background: Kyphosis means an abnormal increase in the curvature of the thoracic region of the vertebral column and refers to a situation where the thoracic kyphosis range is more than forty five degrees. Vertebral column taping seems to be one of the most effective ways of treating kyphosis. The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the effect of two taping techniques in reducing the degree of kyphosis in girls aged 18-30 years. Methods: Thirty-two volunteers were randomly assigned into two groups (n=19 per group) of V–shaped tape and I-shaped tape. Taping techniques were performed as follows by applying 50% tensile force: V–shaped tape: The tape started on both sides of the anterior of acromioclavicular joint and extended to the spinous process of T6 vertebra. I–shaped tape: The patient's body was kept in a standing and straight state and then a longitudinal tape was applied from T1 to the deepest lumbar lordosis region. The measurements were carried out before, immediately, 24, and 48 hours after taping by a flexible ruler in a similar manner. Data analysis was performed using Friedman Test, Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test, Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and Mann Whitney Test. Results: The results of this study showed a significant reduction in the degree of kyphosis in the case of the V-shaped tape 48 hours after taping. However, the degree of kyphosis decreased after 24 h (P = 0.001) and 48 hours (P< 0001) in the I-shaped tape group. In addition, there was no significant difference between the two interventions in terms of decreasing the degree of kyphosis at any time interval except for 24 hours (P=0.043). Conclusion: Taping reduces the degree of kyphosis by creating mechanical support, creating proprioceptive feedback, affecting the proprioception, improving the function of spinal erectors, and improving the mental image of the body with kyphosis. It appears that the I-shaped tape positioning on the alignment of spinal erectors spine makes it more effective.
