Abstract

Background
Auditory system can detect location of sound source and pay attention to it.
In background noise (especially speech) this system is able to detect and
understand the desired signal. This ability is called spatial auditory
processing which disruption can damage any of those abilities. This is more
important in the elderly.
Therefore, in the present article, spatial auditory processing disorder and
rehabilitation methods that is done in Iran for the elderly, has been
reviewed.
Methods
In this review, articles from 2000 to February 2021 have been theoretically
reviewed. Articles were searched and studied using spatial hearing, spatial
release of masking, binaural advantage, spatial stream segregation,
rehabilitation, aging, elderly, speech in noise, localization, training and Iran
keywords in various combinations in the Medline, Google, Scholar,
ProQuest, Science direct, Scopus and Magiran databases.
Results
Considering the effect of age on spatial auditory processing, the
importance and functions of spatial auditory in hearing processing
especially in complex environments, rehabilitation can affect an important
part of speech perception problems in the elderly. The results of this study
emphasize the need to develop rehabilitation programs in different groups
of elderly with different needs.
