Read More Background:The use of push-ups has been suggested to strengthen the scapular stabilizers, while incorporating unstable surfaces is recommended to enhance the involvement of the neuromuscular system. However, the impact of this instability on electromyography (EMG) activity in the periscapular muscles during push-ups in individuals with Scapular dyskinesis remains uncertain. Consequently, the objective of the current study was to assess the influence of unstable surfaces on EMG activity in the trapezius and Serratus anterior muscles among individuals with scapular dyskinesis during push-ups.Methods:A comprehensive search was conducted in Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus databases, covering articles published from the inception of these databases until September 25, 2021. The search strategy utilized three main keyword categories: Scapular dyskinesis, electromyography, and push-up. Initially, 5,249 articles were identified through this search process. After a thorough assessment of the full text of these articles, four studies were deemed suitable for inclusion in the final review. Data extraction and evaluation of methodological quality were carried out as part of the review process. The Standardized Mean Difference (SMD) and corresponding 95% Confidence Interval (CI) were calculated to perform the meta-analysis using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (CMA) Software, Version 3. Statistical significance was determined by a p-value less than 0.05.Results:The findings of the study revealed that the utilization of unstable surfaces among individuals with scapular dyskinesis led to an increase in the activity of the upper trapezius (P= 0.011; SMD= 0.807 [95%CI 0.188, 1.427]). Conversely, it reduced the Serratus anterior's activity (P= 0.000; SMD= -0.665 [95%CI -1.023, -0.307]). However, the electromyography activity of the Lower trapezius was not significantly affected (P= 0.176).Conclusion:Due to the imbalance between the upper trapezius and serratus anterior muscles in individuals with scapular dyskinesis, caution should be exercised when using unstable surfaces. Incorrect utilization of unstable surfaces may worsen these individuals' muscle imbalance. Therefore, it is advisable to approach unstable surfaces with heightened caution in individuals with scapular dyskinesis.

Read More Background: Forward head posture is a major postural deformity in the head and neck area. Considering the importance and secondary consequences of this deformity, current study aims at investigating this deformity among boys and girls of different educational levels of Tehran universities. Methods: This is a cross-sectional descriptive and field study (causal-comparative). A total of 1017 students, 511 girls (age: 23.74±3.91, height: 162.42±7.14, weight: 57.33±8.87) and 506 boys (age: 23.82±3.57, height: 174.70±7.97, weight: 69.19±12.18) were selected. Their forward head angle was measured 3 times by a specific goniometer and the subjects' final angle was considered as the average of three measurements. Data were analyzed using SPSS V.22 software and the two-way ANOVA, Tukey and one-way ANOVA tests. Results: The results of one-way ANOVA analysis showed a significant difference in the head angle of the students at different educational levels (p <0.05). The results of Tukey post-hoc test showed a significant difference between post-graduate and undergraduate female students and doctoral female students (p <0.05). Also, there was a significant difference only between male undergraduate students and male doctoral students (p <0.05). The results of two-way ANOVA showed that gender and educational level factors had a significant effect on head angle (p <0.05), but neither factor had an interaction effect on head angle (P>0.05). Conclusion: According to the results of this study, educational level and gender were the major factors in the development of forward head posture, so considering these two variables could be effective in prevention, control, and correction of related deformities. Read More Background: Balance is an indispensable part of daily activities and is considered important in examining the performance of athletes especially in basketball. Despite the advantages of neck proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) training on neck proprioception, it has remained understudied. Neck proprioception is very important for performance in exercise. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of neck PNF training on neck proprioception on postural stability and limit of stability in elite female basketball players. Methods: In this study, 30 female basketball players with at least three years of basketball activity were randomly assigned into two groups: experimental group (neck PNF training) and control group. The experimental group participated in 4-week neck PNF training sessions (12 sessions per week). On the other hand, the control group performed only daily routine exercises. Limit of stability and postural stability index of the participants were determined by the Biodex balance test before and after the exercise program. Independent t-test (between the two groups) and paired t-test (in each group) were applied using the SPSS-18 software to analyze the obtained data, with a significance level of p<0.05 adopted. Results: The results indicated that after 4 weeks of neck PNF training, the means of overall stability index in the exercise group decreased from 1.47±0.27 to 0.92±0.07 (P<0.001). Also, for mediolateral index, it declined from 1.17±0.37 to 0.85±0.35 (P=0.04), and for the anteroposterior index it fell from 1.14±0.13 to 0.92±0.08 (P<0.001). However, there were no significant differences between prepost training in the control group. Conclusion: These results provide evidence that neck PNF training can be used to enhance the postural stability and limit of stability indices of basketball players. The neck proprioception may be improved with training programs, and neck PNF training improved postural stability index can reduce sports injuries and enhance athletic performance.
