Abstract

Background: Life balance is defined as having a satisfying pattern of activities or occupations that is sustainable and meaningful to a person within his/her current context and life conditions, and could be considered as an important outcome in medical-rehabilitation services. The Life Balance Inventory (LBI) is a self-reported and comprehensive measure developed to evaluate life balance. The aim of this study was to translate and validate the LBI with the Iranian population.
Methods: A methodological and cross-sectional study with a sample population consisted of 150 healthy and 93 mentally ill people were studied. The validation processes, including content validity, discriminant validity (construct validity), test-retest reliability, and internal consistency of the LBI, were conducted.
Results: Persian translation of LBI has an acceptable content validity. Discriminant validity showed difference between the life balance of healthy people and people with mental disorders. The test-retest reliability was 0.7 to 0.93 over a 2-week period. The internal consistency was good (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.88).
Conclusion: The LBI has acceptable statistical values for use in Iranians. This questionnaire can also discriminate between people with and without mental disorders. The Persian version of the LBI can be used in different specialties and settings.
