Background: coping means cognitive and behavioral attempts made to manage a stressful situation. Caring for multiple sclerosis (MS) patients is associated with increased stress in the caregiver. Recognizing and managing caregivers' coping strategies can speed up the rehabilitation of MS patients and improve the quality of treatment. Therefore, this study was conducted to translate and evaluate the validity and reliability of the Persian version of Coping with MS Caregiving Inventory (CMSCI).
Method(s): In this methodological research, as many as 170 caregivers of MS patients have been investigated. This scale's Persian translation was conducted using the International Quality of Life Assessment (IQOLA) method. The face validity of CMSCI was achieved by researching 10 caregivers and the content validity was conducted by qualitative and quantitative methods using the content validity index and content validity ratio methods. To evaluate the reliability of CMSCI, a test-retest was conducted on 54 caregivers who completed the questionnaire with an interval of 10 days. Internal consistency was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha method.
Results: The mean (SD) for the participant caregiver's age in this study was 42.3 (11.1). The mean (SD) for people with MS who were under care by caregivers was 38.6 (9.2). The reliability of the test-retest of CMSCI was calculated to be 0.82 to determine the stability. The internal consistency of CMSCI was determined to be 0.75 by Cronbach’s alpha method.
Conclusion: The Persian version of CMSCI demonstrated good validity and reliability in assessing coping skills for caregivers of people with MS. Considering the vital role of caregivers in the treatment team and the impact of effective coping strategies on the quality of care for people with MS, utilizing the CMSCI can be beneficial in evaluating and enhancing the rehabilitation process for people with MS and their caregivers.
