Abstract

Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is one of the most common diseases of the central nervous system, which is mostly focused on the elderly age group, and its symptoms include tremors, slowness of movements, muscle stiffness (rigidity), and postural instability. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of eight weeks of rebound therapy on the balance and quality of life in people with PD.
Methods: This was a quasi-experimental research with pre-test and post-test. Among patients with PD, 24 people who had severity 2 to 3 according to the Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS), were selected as convenience and judgmental and randomly divided into two groups, a rebound therapy (n=12) and a control group (n=12). Parkinson's disease quality of life questionnaire (PDQL) was used to evaluate the quality of life levels. Also, the Single Leg Stance (SLS) Test and Y-Balance Test (YBT-LQ) were used to evaluate static and dynamic balance, respectively. The exercises of the intervention group were performed for eight weeks (two one-hour sessions each week). To analyze the data, repeated measures ANOVA was used at a significance level of 0.05. 
 
Results: The results showed that the post-test quality of life scores in the rebound therapy group was significantly higher than the pre-test, which means that the intervention increased the quality of life (QoL) in patients (P ≤ 0.05). Also, the results showed that the amount of static and dynamic balance of rebound therapy group patients in the post-test was significantly higher than in the pre-test (P ≤ 0.05). 
Conclusion: The results showed that rebound therapy for eight weeks can be an effective method to improve the balance and quality of life in patients with PD. Therefore, in medical centers, rebound therapy can be used as a complementary rehabilitation method to improve the health of PD.
