Abstract

Background: It is very important for physiotherapists to be aware of the principles of professional ethics in their field so that they can make correct decisions when faced with ethical dilemmas. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of awareness of physiotherapists in Shiraz about the ethical principles proposed in the codes of professional ethics in the field of physiotherapy.
Method: In order to conduct this cross-sectional study, a checklist containing 20 items was designed and given to 163 physiotherapists working in Shiraz. The items were scored with a 5-point scale (based on Likert). In this checklist, the maximum score was 100 and the minimum possible score was 20.
Results: Out of 163 physiotherapists, 109 completed the checklist. The mean score obtained by the participating physiotherapists in this study was 80.1 ± 6.5. The mean score obtained was related to age (rs=0.9, pvalue <0.001) and experience of clinical activity (rs=0.32, pvalue <0.001) of physiotherapists. There was no significant difference in the level of knowledge of professional ethics codes between men and women (pvalue=0.99) and among those working in the private, public or both sectors (pvalue=0.39).
Conclusion: Overall, the results of this study showed that the level of knowledge of Shiraz physiotherapists about the codes of professional ethics is at a good level; Although some codes require more training.
