Abstract
Background: Individuals with mental disorders experience limitations in participation in daily life activities. Exacerbation of the symptoms and the person's inability to function sufficiently are reason to hospitalization. Our aim was to review the existing studies to determine the extent and nature of research in occupational therapy intervention for acute psychiatric inpatient by a scoping review.
Method: The scoping review was conducted to extract relevant literature using the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews guidelines. The review was done in three stages according to the scoping review method including pre-search, search and post-search steps. Structured search of three databases including Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus was conducted for items dated to 5 April 2023. Two independent reviewers reviewed the extracted literature in two stages.
Results:Thirteen articles met the inclusion criteria. The majority of publications were in the Japan followed by United States and Germany. Occupational therapy intervention was compared with control group who did not participate in such activities. Statistically significant difference was reported in the scores of Personal and Social Performance Scale. Use of a weighted blanket in sensory room reduced significantly distress and a range of disturbed behaviors. In the investigation of effectiveness of MetaCognitive Training, Cognitive Remediation and Occupational Connections (OC) significant differences were reported between the groups.
Conclusion:It seems that occupational therapy intervention in acute psychiatric inpatient is effective intervention. Further investigation need to prepare occupational therapy intervention methods for acute psychiatric inpatients.
