Background: Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis is a 3-dimentional spinal deformity with lateral deviation from normal vertical direction and mostly with rotation of vertebral bodies. Although there is some studies about effect of scoliosis on respiratory system, there aren’t clear results with this and some of them has conflict. Therefore, the aim of this review article is to find some evidences to make clear the effects of scoliosis on respiratory system and factors that have effect on it.
Methods: An electronic search was done based on PubMed, Google Scholar, and Science with the following keywords: Adolscent Idiopathic scoliosis, Respiratory function and problem and system, Ventilatory function and problem and system, Chest wall motion.The quality of the studies was evaluated by use of Black and Down tool.
Results: Although 64 papers have been found based on the selected key words, finally 6 papers fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The range of reporting, External Validity, Internal validity – bias, Internal Validity – Confounding (selection bias) and Power were(5-7), (0-2), (2-4), (0-3), ( 5-2) respectively.
Conclusion: Based on the studies have already been done, the effects of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis on respiratory system is challengeable. Moreover the effects of chest wall motions, respiratory muscles performance and regressions of them are not clear. According to current studies results , scoliosis deformity influence on respiratory system, in addition individuals with scoliosis in comparison of normals showed different respiratory functions and patterns.
